The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is also known as the “Big Board”. The NYSE is the world’s largest stock exchange by market capitalization. The origins of the exchange date all the way back to 1792. The NYSE was formerly run as a private organization. The NYSE became a public entity in 2005 after the acquisition Archipelago.

The NYSE is operated by NYSE Euronext. In 2007 NYSE merged with the fully electronic stock exchange Euronext. In December 2012 the company was sold to Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), a futures exchange.
